Mahua Sen

Born: September 6th, 1979, India

Visual artist, singer and writer. Mahua Sen is a multi-disciplinary artist. Her work revolves around existentialist and anti-individualist themes. Human isolation and indentity remain strong philosophical subjects in all her artistic practices.

Visual Arts: Mahua primarily works with charcoal as a medium and does largescale drawings on canvas and paper. Her installation works are in thread and metal. Her works are in the collections of some prominent museums and institutions.The Essl Museum, Vienna has a 21ft tryptich in Charcoal and a video and sound installation of her work -Stories in her womb,2010 in its private collection.

 

Music: Mahua is primarily a writer and her songs are born out of the urges of lyric. The themes are similar to her visual discourse; about isolation and quest of purpose. She trained in Indian Classical music since the age of 3 and has learnt from masters like Pt. Ajoy Chakrabarty and Pt. Channulal Mishra. She has unconsciously defined the language of her musicality under the influence of Leonard Cohen on one hand and Riyuchi Sakamoto on the other (as the two extreme points and a whole world in between). She has worked with Talvin Singh, Shri (Badmarsh and Shri) amongst other contemporary producers. Her first solo project with producer Rohan Ramanna (Nicholson, Mumbai) is due for completion and release in 2015.

 

She is a former television producer and director  (National Geograpic Channel, India) and has worked as a strategic and creative consultant for over a decade.

Her current interests are in Shibori and printmaking.
